Singing in Masks: from the Pandemic Ridiculous to the Operatic Sublime

We’re back, baby! I’m once again presenting the spotlight Lecture for National Opera Week/ World Opera Month, by OPERA America, through OperaBuffs of WNY. “Singing in Masks: from the Pandemic Ridiculous to the Operatic Sublime” a Lecture-Recital with Contralto and musicologist Suzanne Fatta.

From masks to masques to MASKS, we will look at the history of masks in opera music-drama starting with Greek theater. After exploring the acoustic or artistic use of masks throughout opera history, I will reflect on what the past two years has meant for singers who have been forced behind masks. And don’t forget to sing in the mask of the face! It is Halloween, after all… Ivan Docenko, piano.
